If you are looking for a truly classic or contemporary timepiece to decorate your home with, then you should consider our selection of clocks.
At Glenbryde, we have an extensive range of clocks. In fact, we have one of the biggest collections of bracket clocks and mantel clocks throughout the country. These two types of clocks are often categorised together. However, there are some notable differences between a mantel clock and bracket clock, which we shall clarify here
What are Bracket Clocks?
Bracket clocks are portable table clocks that were made throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The term is thought to have originated from the small weight-driven pendulum clocks that needed to be mounted onto a special bracket on a wall to allow space for their hanging weights. (These were often referred to as “true bracket clocks”). Bracket clocks which used mainsprings and Fusee barrels instead of weights were introduced and often would have been made with a matching decorative wall bracket.
Modern bracket clocks continue to be called such, even though they are predominantly spring-driven and do not need hanging weights to give them power.
Many of the original bracket clocks were designed to be repeaters, striking clocks that could be manufactured to repeat the strike on the hours when a cord or lever is pulled. This is a feature that is used in clocks to help tell the time in low light conditions. Often the bracket clocks were situated in owners bedrooms and therefore, so as not to disturb people from sleeping, the clocks were made with a strike or chime silence lever.
What are Mantel Clocks?
Mantel clocks, also referred to as shelf clocks, are normally smaller clocks that are designed to sit, as the names suggest, on a mantel above a fireplace or on a shelf. This type of clock was first designed and manufactured in France during the 1750s.Therefore they are sometimes referred to as antique mantel clocks or French mantel clocks. While they may share some similar characteristics to chamber clocks that were similarly sized, the main difference was that they did not have carrying handles.
